Community League Membership Changes
Could Affect Your Community

A Message from the Community Leagues of Riverbend-Terwillegar

Dear Hockey Parents,

In an attempt to streamline hockey registrations in the City of Edmonton the EMHA (Edmonton Minor Hockey Association) and the EFCL (Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues) entered into an agreement to honor a $25 corporate membership in lieu of the family community league membership.  This new corporate rate is available to all families registering for hockey in the 2010-2011season. 

A family community league membership in each league of Area H (Brookview, Hodgson, Oak Hills, Ogilvie Ridge, Riverbend, Terwillegar, The Ridge, and Greater Windermere) is $40.  By instigating the corporate rate the EFCL/EMHA are endorsing a two-tiered system, offering a break for families who participate in hockey.  It is only a matter of time before this precedent erodes the foundation of each of our community leagues.  The revenue loss alone will impact our ability to offer the programs and facilities that community leagues maintain and operate. 

Benefits to Community League Membership

Do you live near a playground, walking/biking trails, a skating rink, or tennis courts?  Do you have access to a playschool, a playgroup or after school care in your community?  If these programs are offered in a community league building they are often subsidized by your community league and assist organizations in offering affordable programs to members and residents of our community.  As summer approaches many of the playgrounds in this area will be staffed with playground leaders, skateboard and tennis coaches.  These programs are drop in programs that are free to the public and yes, your community leagues finance them with membership dollars, grants and fundraising. 

Further benefits of maintaining a community league membership include free community swim on Sundays, free swimming all summer long at outdoor pools, a 20% discount towards membership at City of Edmonton recreation facilities, and free skate tags.  Your community league also organizes celebrations in each of your neighborhoods that promote community spirit and cohesiveness.  Even if you do not participate in any of the above programs or take advantage of the events or facilities in your community, we hope that you agree that community leagues help make our community a better place to live, work and play.

The Community Leagues of this area respect the agreement brokered by the EMHA and EFCL. 

However, we hope that you will also continue to support your community league by paying an additional $17 to maintain a family membership.  Community leagues in the Riverbend area (Area H) are trying to be proactive in dealing with this challenging situation. We have always had a good relationship with the SWAT hockey association and we are appreciative of their ongoing support as our organizations try to minimize the impact of this decision.

Each community league in this area will maintain that a family membership of $42 will include a membership card and number, skate tags, and all the benefits that accompany such a membership.   A family holding only a corporate hockey membership does not automatically gain full community league membership. To do so will require the additional payment of $17, for a total payment of $42.  The balance payment of $17 can be made at any time to your community league by contacting your community league membership coordinator.

Terwillegar Community League supports the areas of Terwillegar Towne, South Terwillegar, Terwillegar Greens, Terwillegar Gardens, Sandalwood, Magrath, Citadel of Magrath and MacTaggart. If you live in these areas, please consider joining your community league. When you join the Terwillegar Community League, you have access to our free activities and programs and at partnering leagues in the Riverbend/Terwillegar area.

1. Free swimming at Confederation Pool on Sundays 4 to 7 p.m. Please bring your community league membership card.
2. Access to free skating with our partnering leagues. Please wear your skate tags!
3. Your community league hosts the free social events that you see advertised like the Family Day Winter Carnival, Canada Day Bike Parade, and Halloween Grab Bags!
4. The community league also supports the free Summer Fun in the Park program, the skateboard park and more…
5. Access to community sports such as soccer, basketball, hockey and softball.
6. Access to other programs like babysitting courses, girl zone, bike safety courses and more.
7. Reduced rates for some Community League programs.
